Gubernatorial candidate Tom Wolf picked up an endorsement Friday from the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties.

Wolf, who polls show is the front-runner among Democrats hoping to challenge Gov. Tom Corbett in the fall, was in State College on Friday to accept the endorsement.

“I am thankful to receive support from the men and women who work every day to deliver quality and affordable access to higher education in Pennsylvania,” he said in a statement.

“Our state’s colleges and universities must be an integral part of building a 21st century workforce, and I share APSCUF’s vision that we have to increase access to higher education for lower- and middle-class families as well as address the rising costs of higher education.”

Wolf is battling a group that includes U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz, state Treasurer Rob McCord and former DEP chief Katie McGinity for the Democratic nomination.

The APSCUF union represents more than 6,000 professors and coaches in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, which include the state’s 14 publicly owned universities.
