Pat Toomey endorsed his fellow Republican senator Marco Rubio for president Wednesday afternoon.
“I just wanted to announce that I am enthusiastically endorsing Marco Rubio for president,” Mr. Toomey said on a conference call.
The Pennsylvania senator said he called Mr. Rubio last week to pledge his support. He termed the first-term Florida senator a “great candidate,” lauding his national security savvy and what he called his understanding of the terror threat to the United States. In working with Mr. Rubio, “I’ve found his insights on intelligence matters and national security matters very, very helpful,” Mr. Toomey said.
He also said Mr. Rubio had the personality to connect with voters.
“He’s got a very uplifting and optimistic — contagiously optimistic — ability to communicate with people, and to unite not just the Republican Party but the American people generally.”
Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who ended his presidential campaign Wednesday, also endorsed Mr. Rubio.
Mr. Toomey predicted that Mr. Rubio would do well with voters in Pennsylvania. Asked what he thought of speculation that were businessman Donald Trump or Sen. Ted Cruz to become the Republican presidential candidate, it would hurt Mr. Toomey in his re-election bid, he said, “I think the reality is that nobody knows how the particular presidential nominee is going to affect down-ballot races. It’s very, very hard to know that, even when you’re very close to the election, and it’s almost impossible to know that now.”
Mr. Toomey said his endorsement is “about who will be a great president, and who has a chance of winning the presidency. Marco comes at the top of the list for me in both categories.”
