Viewing for William J. McCarthy IV, the Shenango police officer killed in the line of duty Thursday when a driver who refused to pull over for police crashed into his cruiser, will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at St. Vitus Parish, 910 S. Mercer St., New Castle.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Officer McCarthy, 60, of New Castle, will be celebrated Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. with burial following in Crestview Memorial Park, Grove City. He will be buried with full military honors performed by the Pennsylvania State Police Ceremonial Unit.

Officer McCarthy was hired by the Lawrence County district attorney's office as a detective/humane officer in February 2011 and had worked four years as a South New Castle police officer. He also had worked as senior training and patrol officer for Grove City College and Penn State University. Recently, he was named the code enforcement officer for the Shenango Township Zoning Board.

He attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a general studies degree. He left General Electric in Grove City in 2009 after working there for 19 years as a repair welder, and head of the ergonomics and emergency response teams.

Officer McCarthy was a passenger in the cruiser being driven by Officer Michael Lynch. The officers were attempting to get past a car driven by Kylee Barletto, 27, of New Castle, to put down spike strips because she had refused to pull over about 10 p.m. for other officers who said she had been driving erratically. Ms. Barletto crashed into the passenger side of the officers' cruiser, which traveled another 200 feet before striking another vehicle and coming to rest. Officer Lynch suffered a fractured hip and ankle.

Ms. Barletto, who has a history of driving without a valid license and was doing so again Thursday, is charged with manslaughter of a law enforcement officer, homicide by vehicle, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and careless driving, among other crimes. The investigation into the fatal crash is continuing.

Officer McCarthy is survived by his wife, Patty Jo; two sons, Michael A. McCarthy of Dawsonville, Ga., and Benjamin P. McCarthy of Philadelphia; a daughter, Christine Head of Dawsonville, Ga.; his parents, William J. and Clara DeSanto McCarthy III of Grove City; a stepdaughter, Laura Ann Pierce of York, Pa.; a stepson, Phillip Mark McFall of New Castle; a sister, Lynn Busatto of Grove City; and six grandchildren.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Humane Society of Lawrence County, Pearson Mill Road, P.O. Box 62, New Castle, PA 16103, and to St. Jude Children Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Arrangements are being handled by the Noga Funeral Home, New Castle.
