DETROIT (AP) — The new mayor of Detroit has been sworn into office, and despite the New Year’s Day holiday, he’s starting work immediately.
Mike Duggan was holding initial staff meetings at City Hall on Wednesday after the morning ceremony.
The former chief of the Detroit Medical Center began his four-year term shortly after 11 a.m. But he has limited powers in an insolvent city whose finances are controlled by a state-appointed emergency manager.
Still, Duggan has been busy on Detroit’s behalf since voters elected him in November.
He’s attended a meeting of new mayors hosted by the White House and put together his own administration. He’s also lobbied with emergency manager Kevyn Orr for a greater role in the city’s immediate turnaround.
Former Detroit City Councilwoman Sheila Cockrel says Duggan’s “been preparing to hit the ground running.”michigan - Detroit - United States - North America
