WASHINGTON -- Federal workers furloughed during last month's partial government shutdown will receive about $2 billion in back pay, the White House said Thursday.
About 850,000 federal employees were furloughed for at least part of the 16-day shutdown, leading to a loss of 6.6 million work days, the Office of Management and Budget said in a report detailing some of the costs of the fiscal standoff.
Drone testing advanced
WASHINGTON -- The complicated business of integrating unmanned aircraft into U.S. skies full of small planes and airliners will begin at six test sites and require several years of testing, the Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday.
Twenty-four states -- including Virginia and Maryland -- have applied to host the testing sites, but the FAA has yet to determine where they will be located.
Lesbian custody battle
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Florida Supreme Court ruled Thursday that a woman who donated an egg to her lesbian partner has parental rights to the child and ordered a lower court to work out custody, child support and visitation arrangements.
One woman donated an egg that was fertilized and implanted in the other, who gave birth in 2004.
But two years later the Brevard County couple split up, and the birth mother took the girl and left the country. The other woman used a private detective to find her former partner in Australia, and a custody fight ensued.
Barbershop attack kills 3
DETROIT -- A person of interest is in custody in connection with a shooting at a Detroit barbershop that left three dead and six others injured, police announced Thursday.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig said a man was taken into custody in Rochester, Mich., after the shooting Wednesday night.
Carter grandson's ambitions
ATLANTA -- Democratic state Sen. Jason Carter will challenge Gov. Nathan Deal next year in a move that catapults the gubernatorial contest into the national spotlight and tests whether Georgia's changing demographics can loosen the Republican Party's 12-year grip on the state's highest office.
Mr. Carter is the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter.
