U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan today named 286 National Blue Ribbon Schools, including five in southwestern Pennsylvania.

In southwestern Pennsylvania, the list names Fort Couch Middle School in Upper St. Clair; Lincoln Elementary School in Mt. Lebanon; Laurel Point Elementary School in Kiski Area; Peters Township Middle School in Peters; and Southmoreland Elementary School in Southmoreland.

"National Blue Ribbon schools represent examples of educational excellence, and their work reflects the belief that every child in America deserves a world-class education," Mr. Duncan said in a news release.

Schools are nominated for the award based on whether they show exemplary performance or exemplary improvement.
