In what it expects to become "the YouTube of online learning," edX, the nonprofit online consortium started by Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is joining forces with Google to start a new open-source learning platform, Open edX, and Web site, MOOC.org, that will let individuals, businesses and institutions offer online courses to a global audience. Anant Agarwal, the president of edX, said the financial details and plans for quality control were still being worked out. Google will continue to maintain Course Builder, its year-old Web platform for open online courses, while providing a path to bring those courses to the edX platform. And edX will continue to operate its edx.org site for its university partners.
