A Christmas Eve home invasion in Ambridge left one man shot and led to a drug sweep of the house that night, police said.

Sgt. James Mann, Ambridge acting police chief, said 29-year-old Chad Gray was shot in the side Monday night after three masked men entered his home with guns and demanded money.

Police believe the suspects knew Mr. Gray and were "very familiar" with the inside of the home and may have been there before, Sgt. Mann said, calling the invasion "absolutely" drug-related.

Police responded to the 100 block of Park Road around 7:40 p.m. and heard a man yelling for help from the roof. Sgt. Mann said Mr. Gray had been shot on the first level, then ran upstairs and jumped out a window to reach the roof. Two acquaintances and Mr. Gray's girlfriend were inside the home at the time as well as the girlfriend's elderly father, who is legally blind and was visiting from out of state.

"He was just sitting there," Sgt. Mann said of the father.

Mr. Gray was taken to Allegheny General Hospital and underwent emergency surgery last night. Doctors are expected to leave the bullet in his body because retrieving it would be too invasive, Sgt. Mann said.

The home invasion led to a drug bust in Mr. Gray's home, which police said they had been monitoring for months for potential drug trafficking. Police sought a search warrant after responding to the home invasion and seeing drugs and paraphernalia in plain sight.

"We have been watching this guy for a while," Sgt. Mann said.

Ambridge police, aided by the Beaver County sheriff's office and Leet police, obtained the warrant about 12:30 a.m. and recovered "a substantial amount" of heroin -- with a street value of about $2,000 -- scales, packaging material, two guns and a small amount of marijuana.

Police anticipate several people will face charges related to those findings, including Mr. Gray, Sgt. Mann said.

Police are looking for three suspects in the home invasion, all males in their late teens or early 20s. All were wearing dark clothing and masks.
