The owner and a long-time employee at Triangle Pet Control Services have each been charged with one count of failing to provide veterinary care for a dog that died in a cage at the McKees Rocks kennel.

The charges were filed today [Oct. 10] by Ron Smith, chief humane officer for the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society.

The charges against Bernard Dudash and kennel manager Paul McIntyre are summary offenses. Possible penalties are a maximum fine of $750 and/or up to 90 days in jail.

Records indicate that Triangle employees picked up a medium-sized brown and white mixed breed dog in Ross on Sept. 11. A state dog warden saw the dog at the Triangle facility on Oct. 1 and told employees the dog was emaciated and needed veterinary care.

The dog did not receive treatment and died in it's cage on Oct. 4, according to the Humane Society.

Oct. 1 was the day that state officials suspended Triangle's operating license because of unsanitary kennels and improper record-keeping.

Triangle, which provides animal control services for nearly 60 Allegheny County municipalities, cannot pick up or keep dogs pending the outcome of a Dec. 4 hearing in Harrisburg.

Mr. Dudash and Mr. McIntyre will have a hearing on the humane agent's charges before District Judge Mary Ann Cercone in McKees Rocks.

More than 20 dogs were at the Triangle kennels when they were shut down. Three days later, when the dogs were moved to the Animal Rescue League shelter in Larimer and to Animal Friends in Ohio Township, the dead dog was found.

Those two shelters, as well as WPHS on the North Side, are all filled to capacity with homeless cats and dogs, according to a joint news release.

To ease their overflows, the three shelters are running what they call "a $30@3special" -- dogs over the age of 2-years-old can be adopted for $30 at each of the three shelters. breaking - neigh_west
