An elderly Bethel Park woman died in a fire in the kitchen of her small home Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
The Allegheny County medical examiner's office identified the victim as Jennie Martin, 88, who was discovered in her home in the 5300 block of Elm Street by police shortly after the fire call came in from a neighbor at 1:07 p.m.
Bethel Park Volunteer Fire Chief Dave Gerber said heavy smoke prevented police from entering the home after kicking in the door. Firefighters quickly arrived and removed Ms. Martin from the home, but she was pronounced dead outside within minutes.
Chief Gerber said Ms. Martin lived alone in the single-story home in the municipality's older Coverdale section, and there were no other injuries. The fire, largely contained to the kitchen, was extinguished by 1:31 p.m.
The Allegheny County fire marshal was investigating the fire.
