A Washington County woman and her mother died in a house fire yesterday on a farm in Cecil, Coroner Tim Warco said.
The victims were identified as Bertha Leona Cox, 78, and her daughter, Nina Gay Cox, 45.
Neighbors told KDKA-TV that Mrs. Cox was bedridden and that her daughter, who helped care for her, was mentally disabled.
Mr. Warco said the daughter called to report a fire on the porch of the home on Route 980 at 9:37 a.m. By the time firefighters arrived, the house was engulfed in flames. Investigators believe Nina Cox might have died trying to rescue her mother.
The victims were pronounced dead at the scene just after 1:30 p.m., the coroner said.
The cause of the fire was not determined. State police were investigating.
