A Butler County man was seriously injured by his would-be victim as the suspect attempted to break into the man's house.
State police at Butler said Shane W. Burns, 28, of Harrisville, was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital after he was struck in the head by a baseball bat wielded by the owner of the home that Burns allegedly was burglarizing.
Police said the incident happened Friday at 10:38 p.m. on Jamison Road in Venango Township.
Mr. Burns, who sustained what was described as a severe head laceration, is charged with burglary, simple assault, harassment, and operating a vehicle while on a license that was suspended for drunken driving.
Police said Mr. Burns had broken a window and was attempting to enter the home on Jamison Road when a 33-year-old man from Boyers struck him in the head with a baseball bat. Police said Mr. Burns then got into the car of a 29-year-old woman who resides at the house and smeared blood throughout the interior of the vehicle as well as on the exterior of the vehicle.
When police arrived, they called medical responders who took Mr. Burns by medical helicopter to a trauma center in Pittsburgh.
The victims were not identified by police.
