Grand opening set for library
What started in 2007 as idle talk about starting a community library will culminate Aug. 18 with the grand opening celebration of the Millvale Community Library, 213 Grant Ave., in the heart of the borough's business district.
There will be family-themed activities from 1 to 8 p.m. in the new facility, which has been reconstructed by volunteers since it was purchased in 2010.
The library building is easy to find. There's a statue of a dog balancing a stack of books on his head on the front sidewalk.

The third annual public reading of the Declaration of Independence will be held at 8 a.m. Thursday on the front steps of the Ben Avon Borough Building, 7101 Church Ave. The reading will be inside in the event of rain. Complimentary coffee and juice will be served beginning at 7:30.
Show to benefit homeless family
A show featuring comedians, a magician and singers will be presented at 8 p.m. next Wednesday at Sunny Jim's Tavern, 255 Camp Horne Road, to benefit the Douglas Tjelmeland family whose Ohio Township home was damaged by fire in May.
The family-friendly show will raise funds for the family whose children attend the Avonworth Middle School.

Peebles Road paving project begins
Road crews will be milling and resurfacing Peebles Road between Hemlock and Presidential drives from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays through Tuesday.
The road will remain open, but traffic is being restricted to a single alternating lane. Flag crews are assisting traffic moving through the work area.
Allison Park Contractors Inc. from Allison Park is the main contractor.

July community outreach events
Bruster's of Ingomar, 9600 Perry Highway, McCandless, will sponsor family day from 1 to 6 p.m. July 14 with games, prizes, moon bounces, a magician, face painting, fire trucks, an auction and an ice cream-eating contest. Proceeds from the event will benefit North Hills Community Outreach.
nThe community outreach Rosalina Sauro Sirianni Garden, 119 Davis Ave., Bellevue, will hold a ribbon-cutting and celebration at 4 p.m. July 19. There will be drinks and garden-fresh snacks catered by Whole Food Wexford. The Armadillos and the Beagle Brothers musical groups will play, and there will be other activities. A donation is suggested for the celebration of the children's garden opening.
