A slew of current and former Allegheny County officials, including former executives Dan Onorato and Jim Roddey, will lead a committee to restore the county's historic courthouse.
Announced this afternoon at a press conference on the courthouse's Grand Staircase, the committee also includes former county commissioners Cyril Wecht, James Flaherty, Bob Cranmer, Mike Dawida, Barbara Hafer, Larry Dunn and Robert Peirce, as well as other public figures.
At the press conference, the former officials unveiled a set of five portraits of former commissioners and council members that will be displayed in the courthouse.
In a press release, Mr. Fitzgerald said he's using the courthouse's 125th anniversary as an occasion to raise money for the building's restoration.
"Each of us is looking forward to making this yearlong celebration a festive one," he said. "It will allow us to really highlight the restoration work that will be underway, as well as what is further needed at the courthouse."
The building, located on Grant Street, downtown, was designed by Henry Hobson Richardson in the Romanesque style and was completed in 1888.
