UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH: Pitt centers up for funding
Four programs that are part of the University of Pittsburgh's Center for International Studies have had designations as national resource centers renewed by the federal government.
The designation by the U.S. Department of Education covers the Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, Russian and East European Studies and West European Studies centers. As resource centers, they will share in approximately $6 million over the next three years for student support, outreach and faculty development.
GARFIELD: Media workshops set
The Pittsburgh Independent Media Center is holding workshops and an open house today at its Garfield headquarters.
The center is a collective that publishes and helps others publish online news. It was started by a group that includes Carnegie Mellon University and University of Pittsburgh students, and now is part of the global Indymedia network.
"Our coverage will be the issues and events ignored by the mainstream media, and also those issues that mainstream media cover with the inherent bias of a news organization run as a business," a media center flier says.
Volunteers will offer workshops on video production, photo production and media literacy from 1 to p.m. The open house starts at 6 p.m., with music at 7 p.m.
The media center office is at 4805 Penn Ave. For more information, call 412-363-1877 or visit pittsburgh.indymedia.org
