Sandy Hook weighs its fate

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Some Newtown residents say Sandy Hook Elementary School should be demolished and a memorial built on the property in honor of 20 first-graders and six educators killed Dec. 14. Others believe the school should be renovated and the areas where the killings occurred removed. That's what happened at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., after the 1999 mass shooting.

A public meeting on the building's future drew about 200 people to Newtown High School on Sunday afternoon, with another meeting set for Friday. Town officials also are planning private meetings with the victims' families to get their input.

Manchin makes pledge

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, said he would join Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain in seeking a bipartisan commission that would look for ways to address the nation's "culture of violence."

"It takes an all-in approach," Mr. Manchin said Sunday on ABC's "This Week" in response to a question about what should be done to address gun violence in the wake of the Dec. 14 massacre in Newtown, Conn.

"You bring experts from all different fields.

"You bring people such as myself that are NRA members that have been sportsmen all of our lives, and look for a commonsense approach."

Television execs talk violence

PASADENA, Calif. -- If there's any soul-searching among top television executives about onscreen violence contributing to real-life tragedies like the Connecticut school shooting, it isn't readily apparent.

All say the horrors of Newtown and Aurora, Colo., rocked them. But during a series of meetings with reporters here over the last 10 days, none offered concrete examples of how it is changing what they put on the air, or if that is necessary.

In recent days, only FX President John Landgraf said he was in favor of further study about any correlation between entertainment and real violence. Previous studies have been mixed.
