Actor Martin Sheen will be honored for his activism by the Thomas Merton Center at an award reception on April 13 at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland.
The crusader for various causes has been arrested dozens of times during protests, earning The Daily Beast's top spot on its list of Most Arrested Celebrities. The invitation to the Merton event notes that Mr. Sheen, who played the president on TV's "The West Wing" and starred in the film "Apocalypse Now," "has participated in such diverse grass-roots movements as the School of the Americas Watch, the United Farm Worker strikes, and nuclear and anti-war protests. Throughout his life, he has shown a staunch commitment to the ideals of peace, freedom and justice for all."
Admission is $50 (or $30 for a "low income" admission) at thomasmertoncenter.org.
The Merton Center advocates nonviolent, civil disobedience against social injustices.
