A 21-year-old Penn State University student was killed when she fell down an open elevator shaft in an attempt to escape a stuck elevator, according to KDKA-TV.

Katherine Ibanez, 21, of West Palm Beach, Fla., was pronounced dead at the Mount Nittany Medical Center. She was one of several people who were stuck on an elevator in Atherton Hall.

The students in the car pried open the door and two jumped onto the third floor from the elevator car. Ibanez slipped and fell about 40 feet down the shaft.
