Overnight closures are planned on the Parkway West and in the Fort Pitt Tunnel during the evening and overnight hours tonight through Friday, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the following schedule:
▪ Today -- Westbound (outbound) closure of the Parkway West from Greentree (Exit 67) to I-79 (Exit 64A). The Carnegie on-ramp to westbound I-376 will remain open.
• Oakland — Traffic is expected to be congested for much of Wednesday due to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign appearance at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum. University Place will close from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the only open exit at the garage at Soldiers & Sailors will be the one that exits onto Bigelow Boulevard.
▪ Wednesday, Friday -- Eastbound (inbound) closure of the Parkway West from I-79 to to the Fort Pitt Bridge, including the Fort Pitt Tunnel.
▪ Thursday -- Westbound (outbound) closure of the Parkway West from Greentree (Exit 67) to I-79 (Exit 64A). The Carnegie on-ramp to westbound I-376 will remain open.
The Fort Pitt Tunnel westbound (outbound) will be closed each night.
Crews will conduct joint repairs in the Fort Pitt Tunnel and overhead sign repairs and bridge deck work on the Parkway West. The work was delayed a day due to bad weather, according to PennDOT.
Earlier this morning at least two people were taken to the hospital following a two-vehicle crash on Route 22 in Westmoreland County.
Westbound lanes were shut down for several hours until emergency crews can clear the crash, which occurred around 4:15 a.m. in Salem and involved a car and a pickup truck hauling garbage, according to county emergency officials. The extent of the injuries were not released.
Other traffic restrictions around the region:
I-376/Parkway East — Single-lane restrictions in both directions from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. under the Liberty Bridge through the end of April.
▪ Occasional eastbound lane restrictions will occur from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through April 29 between the McClaren Road interchange and the Beaver County line as crews prepare emergency pull-off areas and perform median work in advance of a major construction project in the area.
Squirrel Hill/Oakland -— Carnegie Mellon University’s Spring Carnival April 14-17 will prompt the closure of several local roads:
Forbes and Morewood avenues will be closed near the campus intermittently from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, April 8, to allow students to transport their booths to the Spring Carnival Midway.
Margaret Morrison Street, Tech Street, Frew Street, Circuit Road and Schenley Drive (Panther Hollow and Schenley bridges included) will be closed from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 15 and April 16. Both City of Pittsburgh and CMU police will be present to help monitor traffic. Roads will reopen by 1 p.m. If weather forces cancellation of Friday and Saturday competitions, races will be held Sunday, April 17, during the same time frame.
Phipps Conservatory will remain open during normal hours. Due to road closures, visitors will need to park on the streets by Carnegie Library and the surrounding area.
Sandusky Street, North Shore — Mill and paving work on Sandusky between Isabella and Stockton streets. Lacock is closed, restricting daytime access to the North Shore from Route 28. Traffic should turn right at Ninth Street, go around Allegheny Center or left across the Rachel Carson Bridge, right on Fort Duquesne Boulevard and right across the Roberto Clemente Bridge to get to stadium parking lots.The work could take several weeks.
Red Line. Beechview — Section of the Red Line of Port Authority light-rail system that runs through Beechview is closed as part of a T reconstruction project. The Port Authority is replacing rails embedded in Broadway Avenue between Potomac and Fallowfield avenues, which will affect about 12,000 commuters who use the Red Line to get to Downtown and other locations.
The Red Line will operate as normal from Fallowfield to Downtown and the North Shore. To accommodate passengers from other parts of Beechview and the South Hills, Port Authority has offered several options.
▪ In the construction zone, a free shuttle bus will run every 12 minutes during rush hours (6-9 a.m. and 4-6:30 p.m.) and every 30 minutes during other service hours.
▪ A free rail shuttle will run from Potomac to the Blue Line at Overbrook every 12 minutes in rush hours, every 20 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes in the evening.
▪ A temporary bus route, 42 Dormont, will run between the Mt. Lebanon station and Downtown via West Liberty Avenue during weekday rush hours.
The contractor hired for the project will work Monday through Saturday, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Blackburn Road, Sewickley Heights — Closed through end of April for repairs to Kilbuck Run Bridge No. 16. Traffic detoured using Glenfield Road, Lang Road and Scaife Road. Access maintained to local homes and businesses.
Route 19/Perry Highway, McCandless — The ramp that carries traffic from southbound Route 19 to southbound McKnight Road is closed through May. Crews will conduct reconstruction work of the structure over Route 19 and the ramp will be for three more weeks. Also, left-hand turns from Pine Creek Road to Route 19 will be prohibited. Detours will be posted.
Baum Boulevard bridge — Closed through June: The Baum Boulevard bridge and roadway between Melwood Avenue and Enfield Street in Bloomfield for deck replacement and road work. After bridge repairs are made, the boulevard from the bridge to Morewood Avenue will be closed for resurfacing. The entire project is expected to cost $12.3 million and should wrap up sometime in August.
Jerome Street Bridge, McKeesport — Inspection work to cause lane restrictions in each direction from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through April 15 on the bridge over the Youghiogheny River. Lane closures will only occur one direction at a time. Crews from HDR and the Sofis Rigging Co. will conduct the inspection.
Interstate 70 — PennDOT has seven projects underway on the 32-mile stretch of Interstate 70 between Eighty Four in Washington County and New Stanton in Westmoreland County. The I-70 work is part of a multi-year series of projects to upgrade the highway. One major change will occur April 14, when all traffic near the 1-70/Route 19 interchange will be moved to the eastbound lane with two lanes in each direction.
Noblestown Road, Collier — Single-lane restrictions Scotts Run Road from 7 p.m. Monday to 5 p.m. Wednesday for a waterline relocation. Work will continue through late May.
Campbell’s Run Road/Boyce Road, Robinson — Single-lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Campbell’s Run Road between McMichael Road and Keiner’s Lane and Boyce Road between Campbell’s Run Road and the I-376 exit ramp. Engineering work will take place as part of planned reconstruction and widening project on Campbell’s Run Road that’s scheduled for 2018. The engineering work is expected to last two months.
Baldwin Road, Collier — Baldwin Road closed between Cowan Road and Pinkerton Road as crews conduct slide remediation work. The project will continue around-the-clock through late May. Detours will be posted.
Ingomar Road/McKnight Road — Single-lane alternating traffic on Ingomar Road in the area of the McKnight Road overpass weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through May 13. Also, the northbound McKnight Road ramp to westbound Ingomar Road will be placed in a stop condition rather than a yield. The ramp will remain open at all times. Crews will conduct bridge painting work. The work is part of the $7.3 million project to improve three existing bridges carrying McKnight Road over Ingomar Road, Pine Creek, and Route 19. Overall work is expected to be complete by July. The prime contractor for this work is Brayman Construction.
Route 19/Perry Highway — The ramp that carries traffic from southbound Route 19 to southbound McKnight Road in McCandless is closed. Crews will conduct reconstruction work of the structure over Route 19 and the ramp will be closed for 32 days. Also, left-hand turns from Pine Creek Road to Route 19 will be prohibited. Detours will be posted.
Route 19, McCandless -— Lane restriction northbound Route 19 between Ingomar Road and the northbound McKnight Road ramp to northbound Route 19 (Perry Highway) through late May. Crews will conduct overhead bridge reconstruction work.
Birmingham Bridge — The southbound side of the Birmingham Bridge are closed to traffic to begin preservation work. All southbound traffic are shifted into the northbound lanes. The new configuration consists of two northbound lanes and one southbound lane. Additionally, all bicycles and pedestrians will use the barrier protected northbound side of the bridge.
The on-ramp from Forbes Avenue to the Birmingham Bridge close, as will the southbound sidewalk. Detours will be posted.
Golden Mile Highway/Route 286, Monroeville — Lane restrictions from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays through June 6 as needed in various locations between Route 22 and Old Frankstown Road for curb and sidewalk construction.
Federal Street, North Side — Closed from East Lacock Street to South Commons Street for trestle work.
Smithfield Street, Downtown — Northbound travel lane and parking lane closed from Fourth to Fifth avenues for the reconstruction of the Forbes Avenue and Smithfield Street intersection. The closure is expected to last through the summer.
Glenwood Bridge, Route 837 — Northbound lanes closed for long-term project to rehabilitate the roads, ramps and bridges around the Glenwood Bridge interchange in West Homestead and Hays. Traffic shifted into southbound lanes near the Whemco Building in West Homestead. Single-lane traffic in each direction will be maintained in the southbound lanes. Ramps closed: northbound Route 837 ramp to northbound Route 837/Carson Street; northbound Route 837 ramp to southbound Route 885/Glass Run Road/Mifflin Road; northbound ramp to northbound Route 885/Glenwood Bridge; and northbound ramp to southbound Route 837/Homestead.
Painters Run Road, Upper St. Clair — Closed until late August for a road stabilization project. Two phases: between McMillan Road and Robb Hollow Road starting Monday; and then between Essen Hill and McMillan Road. The detour route will utilize Robb Hollow Road and Bower Hill Road.
Second Avenue — Lane restrictions will occur on Second Avenue and Municipal Court Drive in the bridge area daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through early April.
Route 910/ Indiana Township — A section of Route 910 in Indiana Township will be closed between Hill Top Road and Cove Run Road through October so crews can replace an overhead bridge, which carries Gibsonia Road/Route 910 over the Pennsylvania Turnpike at milepost 43.6. Detours will be posted. The 12-mile detour for cars will send vehicles from Saxonburg Boulevard to Harts Run Road, Dorseyville Road, Fox Chapel Road, Guys Run Road and Locust Hill Road.
