Frank Rysz, a former letter carrier who got probation for stealing from his own union, received probation again today for stealing from the U.S. mail.
U.S. District Judge Nora Barry Fischer gave him five years, six months of which he has to serve in a halfway house.
Rysz, 49, of Mount Pleasant in Westmoreland County, had pleaded to a count of theft of mail after prosecutors said he stole cash from three letters as well as an advertisement.
His lawyer said the offense might be indicative of a "mental disturbance."
As the former secretary-treasurer of the Mount Pleasant branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers, he had been indicted in 2013 on charges of stealing $12,515 from the union over three years.
He was still on federal probation from that case when he was charged with the new one.
A 27-year veteran of the postal service, he kept his job after the first conviction but lost it this time.
He also has convictions for assault and drunk driving in 2008 and 2009.
