A mother and her young son were killed this morning in a two-vehicle crash in Westmoreland County, authorities said.

The county coroner's office identified them as Jillian Marie Trayter, 31, of Ruffs Dale in East Huntingdon and her son, Calin Harvey Trayter, 2. Both died at the scene.

A county dispatcher said the crash occurred about 6:54 a.m. on Route 981 in South Huntingdon. Deputy coroner Sean R. Hribal said at least one person in the second vehicle was taken to a hospital, but only as a precaution.

What caused the crash is still unknown, but neither road nor weather conditions appeared to be factors, he said.

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating, and a representative from the Uniontown barracks was working to reconstruct the crash today.
