An Indiana County man was arraigned today on charges including attempted homicide after Pennsylvania State Police said he shot his ex-girlfriend four times Sunday at her Westmoreland County home, critically injuring her.
Arthur L. Whitfield, 51, of Josephine, is in the Indiana County Jail today in lieu of $250,000 bond. He was also charged with assault, recklessly endangering another person, criminal trespass and various gun violations and awaits a Dec. 11 preliminary hearing.
State police Trooper Stephen Limani said Whitfield was angry about the breakup and other changes in the relationship.
State police said Whitfield went into Holly George Embry's Derry residence through an unlocked door about 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
According to the criminal complaint, Whitfield pulled out a handgun, cussed at Ms. Embry, 35, and fired four rounds into Ms. Embry, who was lying on the bed.
Ms. Embry's 15-year-old daughter witnessed the shooting, and Whitfield's 21-year-old daughter saw only the end of it, Trooper Limani said.
Ms. Embry's 13-year-old child and the couple's 9-year-old child did not see the shooting, state police said.
Ms. Embry was flown to UPMC in critical condition, state police said.
Whitfield was arrested shortly after 2:30 a.m. a few miles outside Derry when passersby saw him hitchhiking along Route 217.
