One person is dead and another injured in a shooting Saturday night at a birthday party on the grounds of former Chartiers Elementary School in Windgap, Pittsburgh police said.

At least 100 adults and children were celebrating at a picnic area near the school’s playground on Summerdale Street when shots were fired around 9:30 p.m., police spokeswoman Sonya Toler said.

Allegheny County Medical Examiners Office this morning identified the dead man as Edward Deakings, 24, of Wilkinsburg. He was pronounced dead at 10:19 p.m. at Allegheny General Hospital.

Another person was shot in the hand and went to Allegheny General Hospital.

Police are searching for the shooter, Ms. Toler said.

“You can tell people just took off,” she said. “It’s a mess. Shoes, food, everything is left behind. People just scattered.”
