Montour school board members voted 9-0 Thursday night to approve a preschool pilot program for next school year.

About 60 four-year-olds will attend morning and afternoon sessions at Burkett Elementary in Robinson, special education director Fran Serenka said.

Preschool helps children learn collaboration, she said.

“It’s not putting a book in front of them and making them sit and write and do worksheets,” Ms. Serenka said. “It’s really teaching them how to play with each other and learn through play.”

The program eventually will expand and move to a new elementary school that will be built on the Clever Road high school campus.
