A car carrier caught fire on the eastbound Pennsylvania Turnpike this morning, blocking traffic and causing a major jam.

The fire occurred around 6 a.m. at Mile 17, between Beaver Valley and Cranberry, shutting down both lanes for a time. The left lane reopened around 7:30 a.m. and state police hoped to have both lanes open by 8:30 a.m., Cpl. Kirk Patterson said.

The fire, in the truck's brakes, spread to vehicles aboard the carrier, he said. No one was hurt. Traffic was backed up for five miles.
