On the advice of Peters Township Police Chief Doug Grimes, the township is looking into making the intersection of Sugar Camp Road and Churchill Road a four-way stop.
Chief Grimes called the intersection, which is currently a three-way stop, “very dangerous” at a Nov. 12 council meeting. Cars going east on Sugar Camp do not have to stop at the intersection as it stands now.
“We have had 16 accidents there in the last several years,” Chief Grimes said. “It’s only a matter of time before we see something more critical,” he added.
Council vice chairmen Frank Kosir, Jr. asked why there is not a stop sign for motorists driving east on Sugar Camp.
Township manager Paul Lauer said at the time the intersection was configured, it was done so because it would be hard to stop while traveling east in inclement or icy weather because of a hill. But he said he thinks the intersection is dangerous no matter what time of the year it is.
“You don’t have a shot at seeing what is coming up in that intersection,” he said.
Mr. Lauer said the administration will explore the township’s options as far as whether a four-way stop is feasible at the intersection.
