Whiteout conditions on Interstate 79 in North Strabane contributed to a 12-vehicle pileup that sent three people to the hospital, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The crash occurred just before noon in the northbound lanes of the highway near mile marker 42 after heavy snow and strong winds caused slippery roads and made it difficult to see, police said. Traffic began to slow when a utility truck wasn't able to stop and struck a tractor-trailer and a Ford Fusion from behind, they said.

A chain-reaction followed, involving a total of 12 vehicles and causing moderate to serious injuries in three people, state police said.
