Sheetz in Bethel Park will soon sell alcohol.
Council on Monday approved a liquor license transfer from a Sheetz in Rankin to the store at Bethel Park store at 4599 Library Road. The vote was 7-1, with Brandon Colella dissenting. Timothy Moury was absent.
Prior to the vote, Councilman Don Harrison said some residents were concerned about noise that might be created by people loitering at the Sheetz parking lot at night.
Stan Wolowski, an attorney with Flaherty and O’Hara, the firm representing Sheetz, said the store is going to post ‘no loitering’ signs on the property. He said Sheetz is also “seriously considering” posting a security guard at the store on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
Both of those suggestions were made by Bethel Park police Chief Timothy O’Connor.
If “no loitering” signs are posted, the chief said, police can cite those who are not complying. Police responded to 77 calls at the Sheetz in 2016, he said.
In other business, council awarded a $1.51 million contract for the 2017 road-paving program to Mele & Mele & Sons Inc. of Braddock. Among the streets to be paved are Oakhurst Road, Milford Drive and Hamilton Road.
Mayor Jack Allen announced the formation of a Shade Tree Commission in the municipality to serve as an advisory board to council on matters such as planting and preserving trees. The new commission is looking for volunteer members. A knowledge of botany and the environment is desired. Interested residents should send resumes by Wednesday to acting manager Judy Miller, 5100 W. Library Ave., Bethel Park, PA 15102.
