A Washington County man has been arrested after a state police chase Wednesday night ended with the suspect running over a trooper’s leg, authorities said.

State police said Jay V. Harris of Washington, Pa., was driving erratically on Franklin Farms Road shortly before 9 p.m. and police tried to stop his vehicle a few minutes later on Route 40, but a chase ensued. At one point Mr. Harris tried to pass another vehicle on Elwood Park Drive but lost control of the vehicle, traveled off the road and down an embankment, and struck a fence, police said.

As a trooper approached his vehicle, Mr. Harris backed the car onto the trooper’s right leg, pinning him under the vehicle, according to police. Other responding police were able to free the trooper from under the vehicle. He was taken to Washington Hospital.

Police said troopers removed Mr. Harris from his vehicle after he refused to get out. He was taken into custody and was charged with fleeing and eluding police, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
