The parents of Steel Valley School District students going into seventh and eighth grades will receive calls letting them know what sports are available for their children this school year.

Girls middle school volleyball was changed from a spring to a fall sport, athletic director Shawn McCallister said.

The decision to notify parents was made after school board member Beth Cannon expressed concern Monday night that parents and students might not know about the change in time to get to practices before school starts.

School director Mike Terrick said students in grades 1, 6 and 9 will attend school on Aug. 26 for one half day to get used to their new buildings. The first day of school for all students will be Aug. 27, he said.

During Monday night’s school board workshop meeting, school director Sue Ballas said she would like to see an expansion of after-school programs at Park Elementary School.

Mrs. Ballas said she would like to see the district offer a foreign language after school at Park, and asked superintendent Ed Wehrer which language he would recommend.

He suggested Spanish as the second most common language spoken in the United States. It was not a voting meeting, and school board members didn’t vote on the suggestion.
