The death of a Youngwood volunteer firefighter who was struck and killed by a train last month while helping search for a missing woman in North Versailles has been ruled accidental.

The Allegheny County medical examiner's office made the determination after completing the autopsy for Edwin Wentzel, 57, who died after he was hit by a Norfolk Southern freight train March 22 while searching for Ruth Mullennix, a missing Wilmerding woman.

Officials have been working to piece together circumstances leading to his death.

Wenztel served with the Youngwood Volunteer Fire Department in Westmoreland County for 35 years, said Youngwood fire Chief Lloyd Crago.

Ms. Mullennix has not yet been found, Allegheny County spokeswoman Amie Downs said today.
