McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko has declared a state of emergency in his community because of dangerous road conditions.

Residents are warned to stay off roadways and avoid unnecessary travel. The city has reached a critical shortage of road salt, Mr. Cherepko said in a press release. The city has been on a back-order of salt since Feb. 10.

The salt supply was further depleted as firefighters fought blazes at two houses over the weekend, the mayor said.

"We are exhausting all our efforts in collaboration with all local, county and state agencies," Mr. Cherepko said.
