Two Pittsburgh area hospitals have been named among the top 100 U.S. hospitals based on overall organizational performance.

A Thomson Reuters study identified Allegheny General Hospital and St. Clair Hospital as two of the best in the country, based on evaluations in 10 key areas, including mortality rates, medical complications, patient safety, average patient stay and other clinical and patient factors.

The study has been conducted annually since 1993.

To conduct the study, Thomson Reuters researchers evaluated 2,886 short-term, acute-care, non-federal hospitals.

They used public information -- Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Hospital Compare website. Hospitals do not apply, and winners do not pay to market this honor.

If all Medicare patients received the same level of care as those treated in the award-winning facilities, the study indicated could be more than 186,000 additional lives and $4.3 billion saved.

The winning hospitals were divided by categories, with AGH being selected as one of the best major teaching hospitals in the nation, and St. Clair as one of the highest-ranking large community hospitals.

"It is very exciting to have an organization of this stature provide an independent, objective assessment of our hospital, confirming the high level of care that we provide," said Michael J. Flanagan, senior vice president and chief operating officer at St. Clair Hospital. "And, of course, it is an honor to be included with such nationally regarded health care institutions as Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Geisinger Medical Center and Vanderbilt University Medical Center."

"St. Clair Hospital has always delivered high-quality care to patients we serve. This award is the culmination of years of work by our medical staff, employees, and volunteers," said Holly Hampe, chief quality officer.
