A Somerset County man who police believe was driving while drunk was seriously injured in a wreck this morning.

State police at Somerset said Terry Emerick, 48, of Meyersdale, lost control of his pickup truck at 12:10 a.m. on Glade City Road in Summit. It crashed into a tree. Police said he crawled out of the vehicle and collapsed in a heavily wooded area a short distance from the accident scene.

Police credited the actions of a passerby for Mr. Emerick being found quickly. Adam White of the Meyersdale Volunteer Fire Department happened to be driving past when he noticed the crashed pickup truck, police said.

He was found by a team of volunteer firefighters from Meyersdale, including Mike Miller, Jeff Hobbs, and Bob Wiermer, police said.

Mr. Emerick was flown by medical helicopter to Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown. Police described his injuries as "major."

Police said Mr. Emerick has been charged with driving while under the influence.
