Forty years after its founder’s death, the Kathryn Kuhlman Foundation has announced plans to close.
“Presently, due to insufficient funds, we have had to make a very difficult decision,” said Carol Gray, executive director, in a statement. “After much prayer and seeking God’s will, we believe it is in God’s timing for the foundation to begin the process of closing.”
Ms. Kuhlman, a Pittsburgh-based evangelist, created the foundation as she was becoming internationally known for her revival services and healing ministry. The foundation was once a multimillion-dollar annual operation with staff fielding as many as a thousand letters per day, according to news accounts during Ms. Kuhlman’s lifetime.
In her will, Ms. Kuhlman left bequests to individuals but not to the foundation.
It has continued operating on a smaller scale since her Feb. 20, 1976 death. It is now based in a Brentwood office building and has been sustained by donations while making available Ms. Kuhlman’s books and recordings of her radio and television broadcasts. It reported less than $95,000 in income on its 2014 tax-exemption form.
Ms. Gray said the foundation will be donating its remaining stock of books and recordings to various ministries and nonprofit organizations. She expects it to close by the end of March.
The foundation will be transferring Ms. Kuhlman’s copyrights and royalties to the Billy Graham Center Archives at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., which already stores a comprehensive collection of her broadcasts, writings, photographs, correspondence and other materials.
“We are so grateful for the privilege the foundation has had over these past 40 years to continue to uplift Jesus, the Savior that Kathryn Kuhlman loved and served so well,” said Ms. Gray. She thanked “the dear friends and partners who have supported the ministry with their gifts and prayers, making it possible for the foundation to continue sharing the love of God with others.”
