A Renfrew woman was killed Thursday afternoon in a car crash in Indiana County, state police said.

Martha J. Sybert, 80, of Renfrew, Butler County, was going eastbound in her Dodge Neon when, for reasons that are still unclear, she crossed the center line of Route 286 near Abbey Road, according to a press release from Chief Deputy Coroner Jerry Overman Jr.

She hit head-on a Chevrolet Colorado pickup driven by John P. Stark Jr. of Latrobe, and both were both trapped in their vehicles and extricated by firefighters from the Indiana Fire Association, the release says.

Ms. Sybert was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:50 p.m. of head and chest injuries suffered in the crash.

Mr. Stark and Ms. Sybert's son Matthew, who was a passenger in her vehicle, were taken to the Indiana Regional Medical Center.

Pennsylvania State Police in the Indiana barracks are investigating the the accident.
