A former Ohio sheriff's deputy who shot his wife three times and then himself in a domestic dispute Sunday night died Thursday, authorities said.

Caroline Lupo, 50, called 911 on Sunday night to report that her husband, Joseph Lupo, 50, had shot her three times and then turned a handgun on himself in a Mahoning Township residence.

Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release earlier this week that Mr. Lupo had died Sunday, and then in a second release Monday, said the hospital had upgraded his condition to critical.

Mr. Lupo was pronounced dead early Thursday morning, according to the Mahoning County, Ohio, coroner's office. The coroner was not immediately available to confirm the exact time.

State police said Ms. Lupo was in serious condition after surgery Monday, and said today that she is reported to be recovering from her injuries.

Mr. Lupo was a Mahoning County sheriff's deputy from 1992 to 2005, when he retired.
