VisitPittsburgh spends half of income on salaries and bonuses, Allegheny County councilman says

An Allegheny County councilman said today tourism agency VisitPittsburgh spends too much on salaries and bonuses, questioning whether hotel-tax dollars would be better spent elsewhere.

Matt Drozd, R-Ross, said he will call on his fellow council members to consider building a new tourist promotion agency, ditching VisitPittsburgh, formally known as the Pittsburgh Convention & Visitor's Bureau Inc.

"I believe that it is my and other elected officials duty to make certain that our agencies and authorities are being good stewards of the taxpayer's hard-earned monies," Mr. Drozd wrote in a press release. "Time is now of the essence to evaluate the benefits being received from investing such large sums of hard-earned tax dollars in this agency."

According to Mr. Drozd's calculations, VisitPittsburgh received nearly $8 million from the hotel tax in 2011. He says the agency spent $4 million on salaries and bonuses.

Allegheny County's hotel tax generated $29,169,603.54 in 2012, according to county records.
