The Duquesne man accused of shooting a man in McKeesport last month told a witness he had to kill the victim as part of a drug deal, according to court documents.

Deamonte Shakoor, 20, faces charges of homicide and carrying an unlicensed gun in connection with the March 29 death of 18-year-old Kellcy Thomas.

Allegheny County police wrote in a criminal complaint that they identified two witnesses before obtaining an arrest warrant for Mr. Shakoor.

One witness told police that Mr. Thomas was walking along Bridge Street and onto Evans Street when a car drove by and the witness heard a gunshot. When the car moved, the witness saw Mr. Thomas lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his torso.

Another witness said Mr. Shakoor was "boasting" about the shooting later that evening. The witness quoted Mr. Shakoor as saying he had to "merk" Mr. Thomas "because he was meeting the individual over what Shakoor described as being some type of drug transaction," according to the complaint.

Mr. Shakoor was taken to the Allegheny County Jail to await arraignment. His previous criminal history includes guilty pleas to defiant trespass and carrying a gun without a license.
