A 40-year-old man, held in the Allegheny County Jail on misdemeanor charges, has died as a result of a suicide attempt last Tuesday.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office today confirmed that John Orlando, of Millvale, died on Thursday as a result of suicide by hanging. After he was found hanging in a cell, he was transported from the jail to Allegheny General Hospital, where he lingered for two days.
Orlando was awaiting his preliminary hearing on charges of simple assault, harassment and public drunkenness, following a March 24 arrest. He had two prior felony convictions, for terroristic threats and criminal trespass.
"The County Jail reviews each and every incident that occurs to determine whether changes should be made, or other improvements can be
made to the services we provide," wrote Warden Orlando Harper, in response to questions, adding that the review of the death is ongoing.
"I am going to be speaking to my attorney regarding this matter," said Orlando's mother, Jean S. Lawniczak. "I don't have a son no longer. ... It's a catastrophe what happened."
Family members said Orlando had a daughter, and enjoyed cooking and art.
