A former O'Hara councilman was arrested Thursday on child pornography charges and rigging his oven to leak natural gas for hours before state agents arrived to search his home for porn.

Alan C. Templin, 55, was being held in jail on a $200,000 bond, charged with numerous counts of child porn possession as well as risking a catastrophe and aggravated assault in relation to the gas.

Agents with the attorney general's child predator unit said an IP address at Mr. Templin's house on Conrad Drive was used to share child porn files.

When they showed up with local police to search the home on Thursday morning, according to an affidavit, they smelled natural gas and discovered a kitchen knife had been wedged between the front edge of the stove housing and the thermocouple for the oven to allow gas to leak into the house for at least 18 hours before the search.

An agent removed the knife, stopping the flow of gas, and everyone vacated the house until the fire department determined it was safe to resume the search.

When Mr. Templin arrived home around 3 p.m., agents questioned him about the knife.

According to the affidavit, he said he used the knife to keep the pilot light lit so he could use the oven the night before but had forgotten to remove it.

He said the pilot light was on when he left for work at 5:30 a.m.

The attorney general's office said it could not comment on the matter, pending further investigation.

But an Allegheny County fire marshal said the home could have exploded while the agents were inside.

Based on that finding, they charged him with risking a catastrophe and aggravated assault in addition to the child porn counts.

They also seized his computer and several handguns and rifles.

Mr. Templin, who served one four-year term on O'Hara council and lost a bid for re-election last year, faces a preliminary hearing May 21.

In an unrelated case brought by the same state unit, agents arrested a Fayette County man this week on child pornography charges.

On Wednesday, agents and police searched the Masontown home of Raymond Trautman, 18, after determining that he had been using a computer to make child pornography media files, according to a complaint.

He faces a hearing scheduled for May 13 on child porn possession charges.
