Firefighters responding to a brush fire Sunday afternoon in a wooded part of Beaver County found the body of an elderly man, police said.

The fire at 380 Court Road in Beaver Falls was reported about 12:50 p.m., said Patrolman Nathan Clendennen of the South Beaver Township Police Department, which is investigating the death along with the state police fire marshal's office.

Beaver County Deputy Coroner Bill Pasquale said Wayne Rose, 81, apparently succumbed to smoke and flames. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause and manner of death.

"At this point it appears to be an accident," Officer Clendennen said, though he added police will await the coroner's findings.

No structures were damaged in the fire.

State police fire marshal David Jungling said investigators believe Mr. Rose may have been overcome trying to extinguish the flames which may have stemmed from burning trash.
