Trial date set for ex-Avonworth teacher charged with rape

A former Avonworth Elementary School music teacher accused of raping a young relative is scheduled for trial this summer.

Following an arraignment Thursday in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court, Walter Street's trial was set for July 21 before Judge Jill Rangos.

Mr. Street, 59, the former high school band director and former music teacher at the elementary school for the last five years, was charged in January based on rape allegations first raised in 2009.

The alleged victim, then 17 and now 22, said Mr. Street began raping her at his Ben Avon address when she was 11. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette does not identify victims in sex crime cases.
