The Butler County man who died after he returned to his burning home to rescue his pets on Saturday has been identified as Paul Jarvis Jr., 22.

Firefighters were dispatched to the home at 320 First St., Butler, at 12:05 a.m., according to Butler Fire Chief George Ban.

Bystanders told investigators that Mr. Jarvis had escaped the fire but then went back in to rescue his pets. Firefighters got just 10 feet into the burning home before it became too dangerous for them to continue.

Mr. Jarvis' father, who lived with him, was at work at the time.

Firefighters later searched the building and found the victim's body in a second-floor bedroom. The cause of the fire was under investigation, but it appears to have started in the kitchen.
