Mars Area junior Claire Georgiadis took the lead in Ballet Academy of Pittsburgh's production of "The Nutcracker," Dec. 6-8.

Claire, 16, daughter of Steven and Leslie Georgiadis of Mars, began studying at the academy in 2010 and has joined in its annual production of "The Nutcracker" in lesser roles each year. This year, she was selected for the lead role of Sugar Plum Fairy.

She is a member of National Honor Society and has achieved High Honor Roll every year since eighth grade.

Two Quaker Valley Middle School students recently achieved individual honors in the 2012-13 school year WordMasters Challenge, a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students.

Competing in the Gold Division, seventh-grader Franzi Nace achieved highest honors by scoring 59 out of 60 points. Also competing in the division, sixth-grader Marguerite Courtney earned high honors with a cumulative score of 58 points.

Pine-Richland High School teacher Evan Clark has been named a Technology Student Association State Advisor of the Year. Mr. Clark has been teaching and serving as the association adviser for seven years. He teaches robotics engineering, manufacturing technology, intro to technology and engineering, materials processing courses.

The Asian Heritage Committee of the Pittsburgh Federal Executive Board has named three Fox Chapel Area High School students and two 2013 graduates winners in its program that honors Asian American high school students. Seniors Andrew Brady, Yonatan Quemado and Masako Toyoda and 2013 graduate Henry Tran each received the Dr. Sun Chun Highest Honor award. Taro Sekikawa, a 2013 graduate, received the Dr. and Mrs. Shiono Honor award from the organization.

North Allegheny High School senior Rafael Lupidi has been named a scholar in the 2013-2014 National Hispanic Recognition Program, a program sponsored by the College Board to identify academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students.

Five Fox Chapel Area High School students were recently selected to perform with the 2013 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 1 Honors Band: senior Lauren Thaete; juniors Tynan Englert and Jennifer Mountz; sophomore Olivia Van Dyke; and freshman Philip Swigon.

Cody Piper of McCandless, who graduated in June from North Allegheny High School, won the 29th Angelo and Alice Ali $5,000 memorial scholarship and the Marie Franciscus Donatelli $500 memorial book award from the Northern Area Multi-Service Center, which has been serving northern Allegheny County since 1968.
