Fox Chapel Area High School senior Christina Humensky and juniors Ryan Naugle, Christopher Tran and Krishna Vallabhaneni finished first at the recent Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference.
• Rachel Trimble of Seneca Valley High School was a winner for her work of art, "Sand Sledding," at the Congressional Art Competition at the Martha Gault Art Gallery at Slippery Rock University. She won two round-trip plane tickets to Washington, D.C., to attend the National Art Competition awards ceremony at the U.S. Capitol Building where her artwork will be displayed for a year.
Andrew Aluise, also of Seneca Valley, won honorable mention for his work, "The Harvest." His work will be displayed in the Washington D.C. office of U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Butler.
• Rebecca Chen, a student at Carson Middle School in North Allegheny School District, and Suvir Merchandani, a student at Dorseyville Middle School in Fox Chapel Area School District, were among six winners in the Musical Kids classical music competition for middle school students, grades 6-8, sponsored by WQED-FM. Both played the piano.
• North Hills High School senior Kristen Grom's fiction novel "Hopefully Yours" received a national Gold Medal Award and was selected by the Scholastic Publishing House Young Adult Division as the novel writing category winner. She was recognized at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Kristen's novel earned a Gold Key Award at the regional competition for Western Pennsylvania.
• Vincentian Academy High School junior Lauren E. Donatelli of Ross earned a $10,000 scholarship award at the Pittsburgh Regional Science Fair competition and was recognized with a second place finish at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science regional competition.
As part of her project, related to the construction industries, she evaluated Formica, solid surface quartz, granite and marble as countertop materials and recorded the durability of these materials against staining from common kitchen liquids, the effectiveness of everyday cleaning solvents, the scratch resistance, and heat durability.
