Butler man drowns in Slippery Rock Creek

A Butler man drowned while he was swimming with friends in Slippery Rock Creek, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Mazzarney K. Sanford, 22, was swimming Wednesday evening about 300 yards below Kennedy Mills Bridge in Lawrence County when he began having difficulties and slipped under the water, state police in New Castle said.

Companions and others nearby attempted to rescue him, state police said. Emergency responders were able to recover him about 90 minutes later. He was then transported to Jameson Hospital in New Castle, where he was pronounced dead.
