Two Fox Chapel Area High School sophomores were among the top participants at the North Catholic High School Invitational Forensic Tournament and received Outstanding Performance awards for being among the top five in their category. Frank Lou was recognized as one of the top five competitors in Original Oratory, and Rishi Mirchandani was recognized as one of the top five competitors in Student Congress.

• Seneca Valley senior Kaitlyn Burkett has been awarded a $2,150 grant from the FOCUS project to help keep Seneca Valley students safe when they get behind the wheel. Kaitlyn applied for the grant to help with her senior project, which focuses on safe driving. She is using the money and working with Students Against Destructive Decisions to bring hands-on training to fellow students before prom.

• Eighth-grader Claire Staresinic was the winner for the second consecutive year in the Mars Area geography bee. Sixth-grader April Bonifate finished second, and eighth-grader D.J. Bauer finished third. Claire will now complete a written exam to determine whether she qualifies for the state contest April 5.

• Junior Nathan Spear (bass I) and sophomore Matthew Plazek (bass II) will represent North Hills High School at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Region I Choral Festival from Wednesday through Feb. 8 at Quaker Valley High School.

• Fox Chapel Area High School sophomore Rama Godse finished first in dramatic interpretation in the recent Upper St. Clair Novice Forensic Tournament. She competed among more than 200 students from 17 high schools.

• Quaker Valley High School senior Rebecca Silverstein has been selected for the National Association for Music Education All-Eastern Honors Choir. Rebecca will travel to Hartford, Conn., in April to rehearse and perform with students from Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Europe, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. She is only the third Quaker Valley student to be selected to the Eastern Division Honors Choir in the past 20 years.

• Avonworth Elementary School fifth-grader Angelina Patarini was named a finalist in the international Seventh Annual GovDoc Kids Group U.S. Constitution Day Poster Contest for students sponsored by Constitutionfacts.com. Her poster was one of 39 entries selected from the more than 30,000 submitted to the contest by K-12 students worldwide. Her poster featured a flag, the Constitution and the saying, "The Constitution Protects Us All."

• Fox Chapel Area High School sophomores received Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership awards. Gerry Chen and Rachel Stein have been chosen to attend the Pennsylvania Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar June 7-9.
