MEADVILLE -- Police say a 6-year-old boy apparently drowned while swimming with a group of children in a creek in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Officer Joe Johnston of the Vernon Township Police Department said the Meadville boy was reported missing in French Creek at 5:40 p.m. Saturday.

Police said the boy had been swimming with friends when he went underwater. They said three adults were watching the group and one called 911.

Officer Johnston said emergency crews recovered the boy's body around 7 p.m. in 8 to 10 feet of water near the Lincoln Avenue Sports Complex. His name wasn't immediately released. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

French Creek divides the city of Meadville from Vernon Township.
