The North Versailles commissioners Thursday night passed an ordinance that will require tenants to pay rent directly to the township if their landlords are behind on real estate property tax payments on the house where the renters live.

After the meeting, township Solicitor Greg Evashavik said the township will start sending out letters to tenants in such properties telling them they must pay all of their rent to North Versailles until property taxes on those homes are paid off.

“This is going to be a great help with some of the absentee landlords and people who don’t pay their property taxes,” North Versailles code enforcement officer Allen Wagner said.

“We’ll be doing a survey of all the rental properties and checking to see if the landlord has paid property taxes,” he said.

Landlords with delinquent real estate taxes will be given a chance to pay taxes before the rent garnishment kicks in, he said.
